Employer-provided life insurance can be an important starting point. But having coverage through work does not automatically mean the amount, beneficiary setup, or portability fits your family’s full protection needs.
1. Check the amount
Compare the workplace benefit with ongoing living expenses, debts, childcare, education goals and final expenses. There is no one-size-fits-all number.
2. Know what happens if the job ends
Group coverage may change or stop when employment ends. Conversion and portability rules can vary, so review the actual plan documents.
3. Review beneficiaries
Marriage, divorce, births, deaths and other family changes can leave old beneficiary instructions out of date.
4. Understand supplemental options
Extra workplace coverage can help, but compare duration, portability, cost and contract terms with coverage that is not tied to the employer.
Four questions worth asking today
- How much life insurance is currently in force?
- Who is listed as beneficiary?
- What happens to the coverage if employment ends?
- Does the benefit still match your family’s responsibilities today?
