Your Beneficiary Check: A Conversation Your Family Should Not Have to Guess About

Check the designation, the backup and the information your family can find.

You may remember who you intended to protect when you bought life insurance. Does the insurance company's current record reflect that intention?

A beneficiary review begins with the actual designation, not a memory, a text message or a note tucked into the policy folder. Request the current information directly from the insurer through its secure process.

Read what is on file

Check the listed primary and contingent beneficiaries, names, contact details and any allocation percentages. Ask the insurer to explain unfamiliar terms. A contingent beneficiary is a backup under the policy's provisions if the primary beneficiary cannot receive the benefit.

Look for practical changes: a new child, a marriage, a separation, a death in the family or someone whose name or address has changed. Identifying a change is a reason to ask questions, not to guess at its legal effect.

Understand the process for a change

Ask which form or secure workflow the insurer requires, who may submit it, and how you will know it has been recorded. Policy ownership, irrevocable designations and other arrangements can affect what is permitted.

Keep the confirmation with your records. Sending a request and having a completed change acknowledged are different stages.

Get help for arrangements involving children or other complexities

Naming a minor, a trust or a person receiving means-tested benefits can involve legal and planning issues. Discuss those arrangements with a qualified attorney and, where appropriate, a tax professional before making a designation.

Guardian My Life can explain insurance terminology and help you prepare questions. It does not draft legal documents or replace legal advice.

Tell a trusted person where to begin

Decide who should know the insurer's name and the location of the policy. You can give a trusted person enough information to find the records without sharing your login credentials or exposing personal information publicly.

A hypothetical family might know that a policy exists yet spend valuable time searching for the company's name. A clear location note helps address that preventable confusion.

A private check for this week

A review does not guarantee a claim outcome. Policy terms and applicable law still matter. It does give your family a better starting point than an assumption.
