Term vs. Permanent Life Insurance: Questions to Consider

Both can provide a death benefit. The difference is how they are designed, how long they may last, and what tradeoffs matter for your goals.

Term and permanent life insurance can both play a role in a protection plan. The useful comparison starts with your purpose, time horizon, budget and ability to maintain coverage—not with a blanket claim that one category is always better.

Term life insurance

Generally provides coverage for a stated period, such as a number of years.

  • Often used for needs tied to a defined time horizon
  • Renewal options and premiums vary by contract
  • Conversion rights may exist, subject to policy terms
  • Coverage may end if the term expires and is not renewed or converted

Permanent life insurance

Designed to remain in force longer when required premiums are paid and policy conditions are met.

  • May include cash value depending on the product
  • Costs, guarantees and flexibility vary widely
  • Surrender charges, loans and withdrawals can affect values
  • Lapse risk and premium structure should be understood before purchase

Six questions worth asking before you compare

  1. How long might the need for coverage continue?
  2. What premium can be maintained consistently?
  3. Which features are essential and which are optional?
  4. What happens if premiums change or are missed?
  5. Does the policy build cash value, and how may loans or withdrawals affect benefits?
  6. Which values are guaranteed and which are illustrated or non-guaranteed?

Do not compare only the first premium

Review the policy duration, renewal schedule, exclusions, riders, surrender provisions and any illustration. Product availability and eligibility depend on underwriting and state approval.

Cash value is not the same as a bank account

Loans and withdrawals may reduce policy values and benefits, may affect guarantees, and can create tax consequences in some circumstances. Legal or tax questions belong with the appropriate qualified professional.
